The Trump administration’s “deferred resignation” program urging federal employees to leave their jobs amidst uncertainty and promises of a “buyout” without confirmation from Congress has officially been put on hold – at least for now.
This afternoon, a federal court hearing ended with the decision to reconvene Monday, Feb. 10th where judges will continue to weigh the merits of the bid. Although the buyouts promise employees eight months of pay and benefits in exchange for leaving the federal workforce, there is a substantial lack of specific language, timelines or assurance that employees can trust they will be compensated.
In a Feb. 5 interview with NPR, NFFE President Randy Erwin made his stance on the buyout clear: “It’s a bad deal,” he asserted. NFFE along with other prominent labor unions and lawmakers representing federal workers in Washington, D.C. have swiftly and decisively urged employees not to accept the deal. Now, they will have more time to decide.
NFFE will continue to seek and share updates to this story regarding deferred resignation.
